What is Regenerative Medicine?
Regenerative Medicine is a new and advancing scientific field focused on the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue utilizing the body’s own resources including adult stem cells. At BennuLife, we use autologous (cells or tissues that are obtained from and used in the same individual) adult stem cells and peripheral blood to obtain specific cells and proteins beneficial in the healing process.
What is PRP?
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is made by spinning blood so that platelets and growth factors can be separated from red blood cells and other fluids. This process allows doctors to use the platelets and growth factors at higher concentrations than would normally be found in blood.
What are adult stem cells?
Adult stem cells are unspecialized or undifferentiated cells, capable of two processes: self-renewal and differentiation. They are vital to maintaining tissues in the body such as internal organs, skin, and blood.
What’s the difference between using my own stem cells (autologous) and ones that come from someone else (allogenic)? What if someone else has better cells than me?
When a physician uses your own tissue or cells as part of your treatment, they are called autologous. These types of treatments have the advantage of being from your own body, which means they will be recognized as your own and will easily find a happy home in your body without alerting your immune system. If a physician uses tissue or cells from another person for your treatment, they would be called allogenic. This is the kind of technology used in organ transplants, and as you probably know, organ transplants require a lifetime of anti-rejection drugs. This is because the tissue is not from your own body and is recognized as foreign by the immune system. There are currently no allogenic cell treatments that have demonstrated superior results versus autologous. Since they are also foreign tissue, BennuLife sees no advantage to using this type of cell. We only use your own cells and tissues to treat you.
Are there different types of adult stem cells?
Yes, there are many types of adult stem cells found in the body, which have variable differentiation potentials. The adult stem cells that aid in the repair of damaged tissue are multipotent, mesenchymal stem cells. These are located in bone marrow and adipose (fat) tissue.
Where do adult stem cells come from?
In adults, stem cells are present within various tissues and organ systems, the most common being bone marrow and adipose or fat tissues. Other sources include the liver, epidermis, retina, skeletal muscle, intestine, brain, placenta, umbilical cord and dental pulp. At BennuLife we currently use your bone marrow as the source for your stem cells.
What is the difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells?
Adult stem cells are found in mature adult tissues including bone marrow and fat, while embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are not found in the adult human body. ESCs are obtained from donated in vitro fertilizations, which raises many ethical concerns. Because ESCs are not autologous, there is a possibility of immune rejection. Adult stem cells do not raise ethical issues nor pose any risks for immune rejection.
Does BennuLife Austin use embryonic stem cells in clinical procedures?
No, BennuLife cell therapy systems uses only autologous adult stem cells isolated from the patient. BennuLife does not participate in embryonic stem cell research or use embryonic stem cells in clinical applications.
Are there ethical issues associated with harvesting adult stem cells?
No, adult stem cells do not raise ethical questions as they are harvested from the patient’s body.
Is there any increased risk of cancer associated with the use of adult stem cell treatments?
No. Where embryonic stem cells have been shown to form teratomas (germ cell tumors), there is no data that suggests adult stem cells have the same potential to promote the development of tumors.
Adult stem cell procedures have a very long history of safety, and according to several studies are not associated with any increased risk of cancer.
How does BennuLife Austin obtain adult stem cells for use in cell treatment?
BennuLife uses a proprietary method to remove adult stem cells from bone marrow. Your physician will use a needle to remove bone marrow from the iliac crest (hip bone), and that bone marrow will be processed with the most advanced technology on the market to collect the small fraction in which the adult stem cells are found.
Are the harvested adult stem cells expanded in a laboratory setting before they are used for treatment?
No, BennuLife does not use in vitro expansion. Clinical studies show that the number of adult stem cells required for a successful outcome are much lower in fresh, autologous cells than in laboratory expanded cells, and fresh cells have the advantage of a much more established safety profile than their expanded relatives. At BennuLife, the patient’s own cells are harvested, processed in the procedure room, and delivered back to the patient at point of care.
How are adult stem cells used in surgical procedures?
Adult stem cells are used to treat patients with damaged tissues due to age or deterioration. During a procedure, stem cells are isolated from the patient, concentrated and delivered back to the site of injury to assist in the healing process.
How do stem cells know what type of tissue to develop into?
The differentiation of stem cells is dependent on many factors, including cell signaling and microenvironmental signals. Based on these cues, stem cells are able to develop into healthy tissue needed to repair damaged tissue. For example, multipotent stem cells delivered to damaged bone will develop into bone cells to aid in tissue repair. The exact mechanism of lineage-specific differentiation is unknown at this point.
Will my body reject the stem cells?
No. Since we use your own adult stem cells, your body will recognize them and respond appropriately in the affected tissue.
Is stem cell therapy safe?
Adult stem cell therapies using bone marrow concentrate have a very long history of safety. This study documents one physician’s 20+ year history with bone marrow derived adult stem cells and concludes that they are absolutely safe. Feel free to ask your BennuLife physician which studies he thinks best demonstrate the safety of this technology!
Where are adult stem cells currently being used?
Multiple types of adult stem cells are currently being used in both laboratory and clinical settings. Laboratories are using human, and animal, derived stem cells to conduct in vitro studies as well as in vivo studies with small and large animals. Autologous adult stem cells are currently being used in hospitals and clinics during surgery to aid in the repair of damaged tissues.
How do I know adult stem cell therapy will work?
Like any medical treatment, there is no guarantee of success. The wonderful thing about bone marrow derived adult stem cell therapy is the wealth of scientific and practical support we find in peer-reviewed scientific studies. Ask your BennuLife physician about the scientific record for adult stem cell therapy in your specific condition as well as his/her own experience with it.
How long will the adult stem cells last?
It will depend on your injury, the area that is treated, and/or your individual response to the therapy. Ask your BennuLife physician to discuss your specific case and individual treatment prognosis. Patients often begin to see results at the 4-6 week mark and continue to improve until the 6 month mark. Patients often sustain these results from 6 months to 24 months. Patients who have their knees, soft tissue, and spine treated often experience the highest rates of success, whereas hip successes seem shorter lived.
I spoke with another practice that is offering allogeneic cells. They say there are more stem cells in that treatment than in my own bone marrow. Is this true?
At BennuLife, we let science and research drive our treatments. Based upon a wealth of clinical research, your own adult stem cells are the safest, most effective treatment currently available in regenerative medicine. Using your own adult stem cells also gives us the added knowledge that the cells we use are living, active cells, not frozen, modified, or preserved in any way that might limit their regenerative abilities.
What does BennuLife treat?
Although the patient needs to see the physician to confirm if they are a candidate, the areas treated can include, but aren’t limited to osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, soft tissue damage, tendons and ligaments. We can also utilize your own cells to treat the superficial dermal tissue on the face, neck, and décolletage using a delivery system unique to BennuLife.
What can I expect to be the outcome of my procedure?
It is important for the patient to understand that stem cells or PRP may not provide full regeneration of that area. Each patient responds differently. Stem cells are very effective in treating pain that is secondary to inflammation. In addition to the regenerative properties of stem cells, they are very effective in decreasing inflammation. This is often what gives patients pain relief. Some regeneration may occur depending on the patient and area treated.
Are there any risks involved in the procedure?
There are risks with any medical procedure, even the least invasive. In most of the procedures done at BenuLife there is a risk of bleeding, bruising, and/or infection. These risks are very low, and your physician will ensure you are a viable candidate before moving forward with any procedure.
How badly does bone marrow aspiration hurt?
Generally, this procedure is completed in the clinic. The physician will use local anesthetic to numb the area where the physician will draw the bone marrow. Most of the patients we’ve spoken to report that they experienced mild to moderate discomfort during the procedure. If you are concerned about the pain, you can discuss sedation options with your physician, which could allow you to be more comfortable or completely asleep during the procedure. After the procedure, patients generally experience only mild soreness at the aspiration site.
Tell me about the Plasma Concentrate Facial.
At BennuLife Austin, we offer rejuvenating treatments that naturally restore the health and vitality of your skin. Ideal for aging skin with slackened elasticity and fine lines, our unique micro-needling treatments deliver your own growth factors (taken from a standard blood draw) just below the surface of the skin to help stimulate tissue repair and regrowth. Best of all, unlike other treatments, there is no downtime so you don’t have to miss a beat of your busy life. The procedure takes between 1- 1.5 hours and is completed by a trained and licensed professional.
How is the plasma concentrate facial different than a regular PRP facial?
Our exclusive system actually processes your peripheral blood in a manner that provides an unmatched concentration of your healing growth factors and proteins, while eliminating the potentially inflammatory white blood cells. This is important, because it decreases initial inflammation, resulting in a quicker recovery period. This concentrated fluid is then used in a BennuLife exclusive device that simultaneously delivers the fluid below the surface of the skin while creating micro punctures into the skin, which will ultimately stimulate elastin and collagen production.
Is this covered by insurance?
This procedure is not currently covered by insurance as it is elective.
How much will it cost?
Please call (855) 522-3668 for pricing information. We offer subscription discounts for many of our treatments. In addition, we offer affordable financing options.
I rarely pay cash for my healthcare. Why should I invest in adult stem cell therapies?
The average insurance deductible today is very high. Adult stem cell therapy is a cost-effective, safe alternative to surgery. It can often postpone or eliminate the need for a surgical procedure, saving you recovery time and money.
What are some conditions being treated?
Our BennuLife providers treat a wide array of conditions. Please check your local provider’s page for their individual offerings.
How do I know the therapy will work?
Adult stem cell therapy is supported by hundreds of published, peer reviewed scientific studies. Ash your physician about the efficacy of adult stem cell therapy for your specific condition.
Will I need a second injection?
This is very dependent on your case. The doctor will be able to better assess your needs.
How long will the stem cells remain effective?
Their efficacy will depend on the severity of your case, the area that is treated, and your body’s response to the therapy. It is different from patient to patient.
What is the recovery like after a stem cell procedure?
If you’re having a joint injection, you typically can resume normal activity that day (unless you have received sedation). Generally, your normal activity will be light for the first two weeks post injection. After this, you must let your pain be your guide. Your physician will be able to give you specific discharge instructions.
What is the difference between adult stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma therapy?
In adult stem cell therapy, the stem cells are harvested from bone marrow or adipose tissue. The have the ability to identify injury sites and differentiate into healthy tissue. The stem cells also communicate with the local environment to reduce inflammation, promote blood vessel growth, prevent cell death, and regulate the overall immune response. PRP is obtained from a peripheral blood draw. It does NOT contain adult mesenchymal stem cells. It contains and release important proteins that stimulate healing. PRP is indicated for specific areas of the body. It is important to understand that stem cells are what those proteins in PRP are ultimately signaling to migrate to the affected site. PRP is the mustang, while stem cells are the Maserati.
Is there anything that would prevent me from getting this treatment done?

Does this procedure cause cancer?
One large study demonstrated that there isn’t even a statistical increase in the chance of any kind of cancer for patients who received therapies using their own cells versus those who had not been treated with their own cells. So based upon published literature thus far, there is no evidence to suggest that this type of procedure causes cancer.
